Green Day is not punk. They play punk-influenced pop music, but I don't hear punk when I listen to Green Day. But that's just my opinion.

Speaking of Murphy's Law, if anyone is in the Chattanooga area Wednesday 12/03 and want to see some hardcore punk and a punky metal band, Murphy's Law will be headlining at JJ's Bohemia. The Unsatisfied is the punky metal group, 40oz Folklore is early 80's Cal. hardcore, and Bruteforce and Late Night Rage are also badass hardcore, too. I'm going, I'm so excited!

Ah, Green Day is punk, but not exactly hardcore at all, even though now they have a darker, heavier sound at times than in their earlier days. You ask me what punk is, Green Day might get a brief mention as power-pop punk. Just because you are huge and have a slightly commercialized sound does not mean you do not play punk rock. But someone tried to tell me they were hardcore punk and I laughed and told them to go listen to Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Murphy's Law and 999 first.
