The song, Stewball, originated in either England or Ireland, where it began as Skewball, meaning a horse with white patches on a coat that is not black. The horse in question won a race in Kildare in the eighteenth century. The version we perform here is very much an American version of the song. It was sung by slaves in the Southern states, and the location varies between California, Texas and Kentucky. It uses an African-American-style call and response technique, as opposed to the ballad style of the English version. It has been recorded by Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston. A recording by Joan Baez, which was my introduction to the song, is closer to the English version.Request by videoblast.

The only good cover of Leadbelly's Stewball I've been able to find. What's with all that Hollies crap? Thanks guys.

I learnt very basic guitar from a book when I was 15 or 16, and never learnt to play it well. Actually I think it was just a section at the back of a little book of folk songs. Response to comments varies, depending on how busy I am. Sometimes I never get around to responding!

Actually I post an average of one per day. My target is 1001 songs in 1001 days. I hope you'll enjoy several of them!

I've done that one now too! You can find it if you do a search for "black betty trilogy".

Thanks, Max. I'm glad you found this one at last. I certainly had a great time singing with this group. I also had a chance to record three songs with the young lady on the right, before our visitors went back to Brunei. You might like to have a look at "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" or "There's a Hole in the Bucket." I think you'll enjoy them. RegardsRaymond

HelloRaymond...If I close my eyes,I could easily believe I'm listening to a vintage take on "Stewball" by Leadbelly. Your back-up group is an absolutely priceless treasure. This was so much fun for the viewer and I can easily tell that you all are having a wonderful, highly spirited time performing it as well.Peace,Stewball
