The opening track is played by Jamal Baba, a resident of Essaouira. He's playing Guenbri (otherwise known as Sintir or Hajhuj)and the musical style is Gnawa, or Gnaoua. It is indeed music designed to induce trance states to allow healing through possession and exorcism. He is an outstanding exponent of this music, with his own unique style.
