The score is written for strings (1st & 2nd violins, violas, cellos, double bass (which doubles the part of the cellos), keyboard, 2 oboes, three trumpets and kettledrums. The keyboard player was the leader of the orchestra and the other players usually stood in groups around him.

Una de las obras orquestales más conocidas de Bach es la Suite nº 3 BWV 1068. La plantilla instrumental está formada por cuerdas (primeros y segundos violines, violas, violonchelos, contrabajos, que doblan la parte de los violonchelos, clave, dos oboes, tres trompetas y timbales. El clavecinista era el líder de la orquesta y normalmente los otros instrumentistas se agrupaban a su alrededor.
