the beat is the single rifle tap given by the senior sentry to indicate that they want to go on a patrol. the junior replies with the same single tap and a count begins. We about 1 and a half months of intensive drill training before we do the first postings and first hill mounts. So we train to do all the drill like shoulder arms, advancing the 1pace, before hand so we know what to do and when.

what exactly is the beat? how do they work on the timing, and how do they initiate it, in other words, how do they know when to shoulder their rifles as one and move and up and do the march?

the beat is located 1 pace ahead of there standing post. the time for when we walk is up to the senior sentry at any time within the hour. timing is something you work on with your sentry partner for about 3 weeks in adavance

thats just how the duty roster worked out to for that day. And as far as the stomping of the foot, i quess that although the CF does base its drill on british drill, we also wanted to add out own touch so that it was also distinctly canadian.

It's the Canadian Grenadier Guards (from Montreal) on duty that day. They rotate their shifts with the Foot Guards

hmmm... idk, maybe they initiate it by simply slapping their hand on the pistol grip, makes a sound, and then the other guard does the same thing to make a pace. i only thought of the tapping of the rifle butt because i saw guards do it in canada, and they do it pretty hard too, like to the point of looking like they're trying to break it. so ya the brits must have a way to initiate it anyhow. ps. who seem to be a guardsman?

you seem to be a guardsman with the tapping of the rifle but but you cant do it with the curreny sa80

I'm pretty sure the senior guard chooses, but I have no idea why he chooses the time that he does. |
