I once had someone's character die while he was gone like that, but I later had to rule him alive on the grounds that, well, it wasn't really fair. Plus, he was swallowed by a Behir, not exactly a dignified end.

That's the way to make someone join a party!(Oh dearie, my first party-experience ended with a furious race after those thievlin' half-elf brothers, a deadly hide-and-seek that nearly left one of them without a leg, all this despite the fact that one of them elves had carisma as a special, convincing persona ability, includning the fact that he and his brother would actually join us from the start!
