"I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby."

Good stuff. I wish that more people in my age group would give Waits a chance, but that doesn't seem to happen very often. Still, Tom Waits keeps going, and has a devoted core of fans that allows him to do so. I'm certainly glad of that.

What's strange is, when he started out it was like a tribute to all of those characters. It was like "who does this guy think he is?" And now, 30 years later. HE IS THE REAL DEAL. An American classsic.

To me, Tom is like some beatnik Moses leading the the winos, junkies, assorted misfits and other miscreants to a new land of his astonishing imagination.

first Tom Waits song I ever heard - probably '81. He peformed it live on Letterman. Broke my heart. He's American Treasure.

Is this the 'tonight In Person' show originally broadcast on the BBC July 26th 1979? It was reshown on UK Arena in 1998 so it seems to me that it is, given the logo in the corner. Am i right? I don't suppose you have more of it? Tom performed such rarely heard gems as Kentucky Ave, Red Shoes, I Never Talk to Strangers and With A Suitcase(!) on this show!

An American original. Will be studied many decades from now with all of the Musical greats. The other side of the U.S.A. The down-trodden and broken-hearted.

Listening to Mr Waits makes me feel sorry for the rest. I saw him in Dublin a couple a weeks ago and he lives every one of his songs on stage. There was much bitchin in the press about the price of tickets but what price do you put on such a glorious comet as Tom. Love that man.

Mayors do not care, nor did the homeless peoples parents. Thats the truth about the world sadly. But yes an amazing song for anyone who feels some sympathy for the rejected children who end up homeless.

Its my fave Tom song also. He is able to look deep into human emotions, a real talent.
