I personally believe that the so-called union that the long-term care workhorses are forced to join & pay dues to (the LPNs & RNs aren't offered a union . . .hmmmm . . .I wonder why? Maybe it's because they tend to be smarter & would actually make their union DO SOMETHING?) are a smoke screen that the owners of such facilities are in collusion with. The poor workhorses are led to believe that if something was truly wrong or even illegal the union would do something. Right?

File a complaint with the administrator of the nursing home if you suspect abuse and have proof (keep a diary, take pictures). If nothing is resolved or your complaint is not taken seriously, contact the state attorney general's office to file a formal complaint. An investigator from the state looks into all abuse complaints filed against nursing homes. * The National Center for Elder Abuse website offers a listing of elder abuse prevention organizations by state.

When you make your surprise visits & discover that grandma has been sitting in the same diaper for 8 hours & nobody helped her eat her supper so she didn't eat it, don't attack the staff on the floor. They were probably dealing with w/ a death, or an inmate who keeps trying to escape the building or the one who keeps ripping its diaper off to wipe the contents all over the walls, themselves or a roommate.Remember the place is purposefully understaffed to increase profit for ownerscont

You need to question why grandma's mind seems to have slipped so quickly after she was admitted, or why she lost so much weight or sometimes stinks to high heaven when you visit or has all those horrible rashes on her butt or wounds where her bones are rubbing through the skin . . .It's because the facility is understaffed & the staff that is present is so exhausted that it's all they can do to keep showing up. . .but those attracted to such a job actually CARE or they couldn't do it.cont

The workhorses are assigned to more bodies than they can keep up with & they aren't always provided the tools & supplies they need (especially at the end of the month when the "budget" for diapers & whatnot has run out). Because they are understaffed, they can't get everyone's diapers changed as often as they need to be & people don't get showered or wiped down as often as they need to be & there isn't enough time to get everyone fed & there aren't enough eyes to monitor for falls . ..cont

If you have a loved one in long-term health care, I suggest you make surprise visits during unusual hours to see what the medical industrial complex is up to. These facilities are understaffed with poorly trained & underpaid workhorses (nurse's aides & others) who have no clue what their rights are, and they have no idea what the rights of your loved ones are.Even though these workhorses are forced to sign up for & pay dues to a so-called union, their working conditions are deplorable.cont

jingling30: organized labor isn't about keeping workers from getting fired if they aren't doing their job or if they've done something stupid or dangerous after having been properly instructed.Organized labor is about helping peons stand up against a huge corporate industrial machine which places profit before the rights & welfare of workers. It's about accountability, fair wages, compensation for overtime, decent working conditions, adequate rest periods & vacation time, proper training, etc

My friend works for AT&T. He makes $58,000 a year doing what a monkey can do. Seriously. Because of the unions AT&T has had to pay $20,000 in insurance claims that happened to him from injuries incured while on vacation. I think unions are currupt too. If you're worth your salt and work hard there is no reason why a company would fire you.

I miss the Clinton years. I don't attribute the Clinton years entirely to Clinton, but seriously. "What didn't you like, the peace or the prosperity?"
