This album's a grower for me. At first I thought it was medium, but now I find myself choosing it more and more often. Come back to it in a while.

This song is a masterpiece & I'm convinced it's a kind of farewell or a remembrance of Elliott Smith. They were friends & this song is reminiscent of Elliott~it puts you in the same frame of mind as Elliott's music does. It's hauntingly beautiful.

(VOLCANO - part 1)"I've been walking on these streets so longI don't know where they're going to lead anymoreBut I think I must have seen a ghostI don't know if it's my illusions that keep me aliveI don't know what I've seenWas it all an illusion? All a mirage gone bad?I'm tired of evilAnd all that it feedsBut I don't know"

(VOLCANO - part 2)"I've been drifting on this wave so longI don't know if it's already crashed on the shoreAnd I've been riding on this train so longI can't tell if it's you or me who's driving us into the groundI don't know if I'm saneBut there's a ghost in my heartWho's trying to see in the darkI'm tired of people who only want to be pleasedBut I still want to please you"

(VOLCANO - part 3)"And I heard of that Japanese girlWho jumped into the volcanoWas she trying to make it back?Back into the womb of the world?I've been drinking all these tears so longAll I've got left is the taste of salt in my mouthI don't know where I've beenBut I know where I'm goingTo that volcanoI don't want to fall in thoughJust want to warm my bonesOn that fire a while"

Beck is innovative, because he's taking a musical style that is dated, and perhaps even dead in the grander scheme of marketing to young and vapid purchasers of musical products. The album Mod Guilt represents Beck on a road that he will travel despite what anyone says or thinks, and something tells me he knows that it's his music. For instance, he wanted all the tracks to be two mins only, as to draw the pure musical value out of the material. It's like nothing before, it's marvelous... :) |
