I even met Cage at John Jay College in NYC in the late 70's and got to talk to him. He told us his music didn't really have a plan, it was what he was able to compose. Also told us a story of how he was comissioned to write two pieces for a university and, like a student with a paper due the next day, he was up the night before writing the music. He ended up writing one piece and the second was a recording of him composing the first. He eidn't take himself that serously as neither did Satie.

Not necessarily true.I listen to the music of Cage, Stockhausen, Riley, Glass, Reich and others but I still enjoy and sometimes prefer contemplative music like this. My favorite overall piano music is probably Satie.

many posters on here have said that they wished john cage composed more music like this....this is obviously because they do not understand cage's music and moreover what a wonderful philosopher he was. He was a true pioneer in his field and influenced many other composers because of his aesthetics. I just think some people need to be more open minded. LISTEN to what John Cage is trying to tell you!

you know,this is serial music.like the other music he made.. he has taken some notes and decided a sequence,then he wrote it. straight to the end of the sequence.there's not heart in this piece.cage is a great composer and he has used really well the alea in this composition.that's it.

Nice piece - the best I've heard from Cage. Check out Luciane's video of the Berio Sequenza, which is played with fine precision and accuracy.
