For anyone that says EVH is technically inferior, I would point to Spanish Fly. I would group Blackmore in with the "media hyped stars", as well, but in any case you're making the mistake of thinking that technique makes the man. Sure, you need it for this kind of style, but it's hardly a substitute for musicianship.Happily, Paco and John have technique AND style, so it all works out.

Woah nelly. Hendrix massivly transcends that group. Yes he was blues based, but his imagination and a little help from Mitch Mitchell meant that he was knocking out some far far gone shit. Inventing rock's half of Jazz Rock Fusion on Ladyland. The man is on another musical planet to most and SRV should not be mentioned in the same postal district.Agree about Clapton, nice blues chops though.Mcluaghlin is on a tier above all of them. All the abilities of all of them.

Clapton? Great at Blues, but he'd be lost against Paco. Paco is in a league with Django Reinhardt, Birelli LaGrenne, Ritchie Blackmore, all extremely versatile musicians, whereas Clapton is basically a one horse specialist. He belongs with Jimmy Page, Ed Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and all the other proficent, but technically inferior media hyped stars in "Pop" culture league known as Rock or maybe at best with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robert Johnson, Johnny Winter, Albert King in the Blues league.
