I can't think of any shows from the late '70s or early '80s that allowed bands to play live. Top of the Pops was all lip synced. Other than Grey Whistle Test and SNL (from which Elvis Costello was banned for something like 20 years for playing Radio Radio), everyone else mimed to a prerecorded track.
