I like it... my perspective is that all these Jesus freaks (term used lovingly) arrived "on the spot" to put on a musical play about Jesus. Or at least that's how I interpret the buses at the beginning and end.

The British Centurions(which dated back to the end of WWII) were indeed what the Israeli Army was using at the time. However, in the movie, they are symbols of roman rule. The war itself needed no symbolism, and because the war was between israel and Egypt, there was no symbolic connection to the Passion week that is the subject of this movie.
