My dearest friend gerrygeorge1,you put the tears in my eyes and a dream in my heart. Deep down I keep this little secret of mine. That one glorious day I might get the mentioned letter ( like I did years ago and which filled me with pride ) and do the duty we Germans are born for . Rule and sacrifice.

What a pity you weren't one of those German soldiers, ottobaby0815, or perhaps one on the opposing side; that way you might have had a different opinion. Whoever, and whatever these lads were, it is pretty evident that you are unable to comment, because you are bankrupt of the same guts or experience. But, don't worry, your country might mandatorily conscript *you* one of these fine days, and then you'll see how hard it can be to resist, when a draft order drops through your letter box !

I couldn't have put it better myself, Miss TrashGore; what you say being exactly that: the soldiers were there, because they were there. They had no options, they were conscripts, and they believed that their country was struggling in a fight-to-the-death against Bolshevism. Today's generations can only posture; the truth being that Zarah was singing to bolster-up the morale of the soldiers; just as did many other performers, both in Germany, and in the Allied camps.

Yes, it *is* a free world, croscream - or it is supposed to be - and, yes, Germany's argument, then-as-now, would be that they were fighting fire-with-fire, to beat a more corrosive, demonstrably more monstruous, inhuman and malignant form of evil, in the shameful and unboundedly-murderous spectre of rampant Bolshevism...and from within the walls of their own country, as well as without. Right or wrong, that is the way they saw it, and this was their struggle... to the death, in the outcome.

Presumably also free to avoid a different hell, Flynn Lindley; via the House of Special Purposes, to slaughter in Katterinberg, as a prelude to a further 80 million massacred innocents, as happened in Bolshevist Russia 20years earlier between 1918 and 1936; a prospect which Hitler's supporters feared from a Bolshevist Fifth Column, looming large in their own Heimat, and more so, after the failed Bolshevist coup at Munich in 1924. Facts speak louder than dreams and Allied propaganda, old boy.

You may not remember you wrote a comment re zarah leander clip which you remarked was the song in Kiss of the Spider Woman without credit. Wow. Thanks for the info. I was so moved by that film. Caught like a fly in a web by love, she was. Wonder what this movie is about? Same thing?

Atleast you are a Christian.

If taste counts for nothing, yes. Free to go to hell, each in our own way.

I know this video is taken out of context... and I would like know what the reaction shot between Zarah and her piano player was all about... when the soldiers start to sing along and getting into her song? It looks like it was Nazi government supported movie... since the closeups of the four soldiers are all different segments of the Nazi German Army... according to their collar badges anyway... Also... Is Zarah's piano player the same guy who played for her in her last videos in the 1970s?
croscream (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I would listen to her even if she was open about her support of the nazi regime. Why not? This is a free world right?
