First of all all buddhist teachings should be respected, they all have the same fundamentals and principals. This monk is very funny, HAHA; As far as i know that the main difference is that theravada emphasizes on the enlightenment of self, while mahayana emphasizes not only on self enlightenment, but also help all other sentient beings to achieve enlightenment.

These teachings are too often taken literally, the filial piety sutra is definitely chinese of origin, but Amitabha Sutras are not to be taken literally. Sukhavatti (pureland) can be called puremind too. Try chanting Amitabha for a while, after a while you will have no more wandering thoughts, that includes greedy thoughts, angry thoughts and ignorance thoughts. Just try it. But Ven.Dhammavuddho is very wise in following a doctrine of logic only, however, I would ague, this works for mahayana.

yes, msyoonie & merlintalk. I agree with you. One should not slander other teachings of Buddhism, which is also true teaching of the Buddha.

I'm just want to verify Mahayana teaching is true. I did not say anything to ask people to believe me. Pls don't put words into my mouth. Because many buddhists claim Mahayana is not true.

he makes absolute sense in what he says . i respect him for pointing out the facts. but sadly, many people nowadays tend to ignore "theravada" as they think it's not as great as mahayana. i'm not saying mahayana is bad but .. maybe when we learn the dhamma, we all should being from the 4 noble truths and 8 fold paths. and make sure we understand these teachings before jumping to other teachings. you may just get the right view of the dhamma.

is that what an enlightened person will say? even the buddha himself did not encourage people to just believe his words without experiencing his teachings....
