And one more thing, "wódka/vodka" is kinda diminutive form of "woda/voda" (water). I like your movies HotForWords, but in this point you`re wrong, especially if in the 9c. there was no Russia at all... Origin of the word is like you`ve said, but if it goes for its history, you`re wrong. Exactly if was Smirnoff who made vodka popular on the "west" and also its Russian name.

The previous liquirs weren`t as clean becouse of destilation and were called "gorzałka" (Polish) or "horilka" (Ukrainian), both names referrs to a word "gore" which ment sometyhing like "to burn". When methods of destilation developed, it started to look like a water and originally it was an expensive drink, which could be afforded only by the nobility. If someone is interested, we`re makeing still wódkas based on the 16-17c recipes, like "Żóbrówka", "Goldwasser" or "Starka" (verry rare).

The word "wódka" comes from Polish, not Russian! The first notes about it were written in Poland, even whole essays like "Wódka lub gorzała" (1614) by Jerzy Potański, "A Treasury of Excellent Secrets about Landed Gentry's Economy" (Kraków 1693) by Jakub Kazimierz Haur etc. In `70s there was a serious debate, but of course soviet "science" institute resolved it in its way. Russians got legends, we got books... Of course it comes from word "woda" (water), becouse wódka looks alike.
