That doesn't necessarily mean there was no old poem. He said "if it sucks, you asked for it" because the audience voted (with greater applause) for the new one. The part that makes that quote a joke is the fact that he said it was written backstage, under the suppressed premise that a poem that is written in a short period of time is not good.

Yeah, reading it now, I read it wrong, man. It was like 2 in the morning when I watched and I thought I read, "That was no poem." So, my bad.

I think he meant that there was only one poem. Regardless of what the audience chose, he'd be reading the same thing.
