http://www.vr-zone.com managed to lay our hands on Intel's latest Little Falls ES mini-ITX solution, featuring their latest low power processor, the Intel Atom. The Atom on the Little Falls is based on the Diamondville core, clocked at 1.6Ghz and comes with Hyperthreading technology. This is the first time that Intel incorporated their own chipset into their mini-ITX solution, previously employing SiS chipset solutions with their processors. we ran some power test on the board, and together with our FSP Everest power supply, 7200rpm 80gb hard drive and a sata dvd-rw, it draws roughly about 32 watts (assuming 80% efficiency, power meter shows about 39watts) of power. Something cool, check the video out for more information.

The heatsink with fan is to cool the GMA 950 graphic chip. The Heatcink without fan is to cool the Atom CPU.

hey, how much power does it consume on idle?
ccrinc (August 12, 2008 at 12:12 pm)
mine runs at 52 watts.

The chipset on that board ruins it

for example an affordable mainstream ram drive can boot win xp in 4 seconds, the ramsan300 can boot windows xp instantaneously, changing a processor will not give you that, because a pc is only as fast as its slowest part. thats why scsi and raid0 and ssd's exists in the first place. Processor performance is overkill for the bandwidth of the hard drives that are available today, unless u own a ramsan300 that matches the cpu bandwidth of a quad core.thats why cpu performance is not important.

ir dosent matter if the processor is a bit slower in bandwidth, becasue a processor CANT fetch data faster than the storage can give it, so you would not see a difference, fast storage is what makes a pc fast, not the processor or ram speed.

Its been 2 months since I posted that, and things have been changing. There's rumours going around in Taiwan that indicate Nvidia is using VIA in order to bluff Intel in a deal. (Nvidia really wants to sign up with Intel and their Atom processor).Recently, Nvidia got Intel to support SLI capability on their next generation CPU. (Called Nehalem). Its the successor to the Core 2 series. It looks like Nvidia support for VIA Isaiah (Now called VIA Nano) maybe up in limbo. ie: It may not happen.

Wha an nvidia chip on a mini-itx I think I'll wait for Isaiah comes out for my next mini-itx project.Nvidia is well supported in linux which I usually run on these things.

Amazing how little knowledge people have. The Atom CPU only uses 3 watts max which is nothing and any tiny piece of heatsink can cool it with ease. The chipset on the other hand uses many more times as much power hence the cooling. YES it is a stupid mismatch of CPU and chipset. NOW, I dont understand the reason why anyone would buy an ITX board. Just get a older Pentium M laptop. The atom CPU is SLOWER than a 900mhz Celeron M. You can buy a pentium M laptop which would be FAR fastr for less.

The chipset fan is too loud :/
