À voir absolument sur YouTube également: Jessye Norman transforme la simple chanson "Les Chemins de l'amour" de Poulenc/Anouilh en hymne à la mégalomanie débridée. C'est presque aussi mauvais que la version de Mireille Mathieu (dont la voix "casse" quand elle ne crie pas à pleins poumons).

Il devrait exister une expression technique décrivant la forme de narcissisme aigu qui incite a défigurer une pièce musicale pour attirer l'attention sur la capacité thoracique et pulmonaire de l'interprète. Je propose le terme "psychose lyrico-normanienne".

I'd certainly use a voice like that with less ostentation and more reverence for the works I sing. She does not command the admiration of true opera fans, only "attention", as you said. The admiration comes from the ignorant, the non-French and the usual unconditional fan-boys who also fawned over the antics of the late Divine and of Ru Paul for no discernable reason. Her "mark" on the French repertoire is that of an elephant on a flower bed: hard to miss but hardly what the gardener hoped for.
