ni hao (你好) is informal, and nin hao (您好), is formal and for people like teachers.

"10 Mandarin survival words" - I'd say phrases like "water", "hotel", "hospital" or "he's got a gun!" would be more helpful for your survival than "hello what is your name" etc...

both has the same meaning. but nin hao is used when you wanna greet with respect. like maybe when ur greeting the elderly.
