metallica choose jason newsted more for the energy he put in his live performance than for his technique. In my opinion he is a great basist, a musician is not considered great only because of his playing abilities, but for the soul and energy and effort he puts in his music and jason put everything he had to give in his music. also cliff burton too was a hell of bass player. don't like too much rob, though he is also an awesome bass player at a technical level. Metallica is the best!!!

wow im really sick of people comparing Rob and Jason to cliff or vice versa.now the comparing needs to stop jason and robs talent are being degraded and their nt gettin the respect they deserve becuz everyone is comparing them to cliff and sayin there nt as gud as him bt u cnt do tht each bassits are talented in their own different ways cliff was ahell ofa bass player bt get real he's been dead for 22 years now.

So can I. Burton was a god, and must have been really close to the other three for them to take it that bad. I guess Jason always reminded them of that loss.

i'd believe that. There's a vid of One without the guitars on youtube, and even then you can barely hear the bass. I can understand why they were such dicks cuz they were hurting so bad, but still, this guy took some major abuse.
