There were a lot of drug references in this song as well if I can remember the meaning I read about properly. Like "Jack Flash".

i feel so silly now. i'm 29 been listening Buddy Holly and this song, and know what the song was about since i was 14 in 1993. BUT I NEVER put the "That'll be the day that I die" and "this will be the day that I die" together until now. And there were so many more hidden meanings than I was aware of.

As someone already stated, Waylon Jennings was not the person who flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. That man was Tommy Allsup. The Big Bopper asked Waylon for his seat on the plane because he had the flu. Waylon said, "it's ok with me if it's ok with Buddy". Later on, Buddy was kidding Waylon about this and said something to the effect of, "I hope your bus freezes" to which Waylon replied, "I hope your ol' plane crashes". The rest is history.
