i think it sounds awesome that distorted! the album version had the cleaner sound, i think this is how they originally intended it to sound. bands often change their levels when performing live, compared to how their producers place them in recording. but maybe jimmy was too stoned to notice. they all look pretty baked...did you notice that robert sings different lyrics in this version than on the album? here he's leaving her cos of the relationship, not BECAUSE it's "calling him".

Yeah that is what I was saying although I would use the word, evolving. Studio recording is what they themselves feel is the best they can do. It is like their Mona Lisa. The vocals hit more powerfully the playing is more accurate and clearer. sometimes live performances hit, but there is a reason bands do not record and release live. Studio recordings are better, PERIOD!They get to hone their art. If I was stranded on an island I would take the studio stuff over live.

What is he referring to?Just sounds cheesy to me and does not fit.They where not Americans so they were not involved with the Viet Nam strife taking place at the time, this is the only thing I can attribute the off the wall comment in the song to.

zepp never played song the way they were recorded. when they played live it was like there music was growing.

Yeah Stairway off of Song Remains is good (I really hate the (does anybody remember laughter) part...but that is one of the exceptions. No Quarter is great live. I guess I am just from the school of lets hear it the way it was recorded for the most part. I have seen tribute bands like Zep Again perform their music more true to studio than Zep does. Personally I like the original recordings, the live are interesting to hear though.
