I guess you'd have to look at it from a holistic view. Yeah, the 3rd is technically the easiest, but if you factor in the expression, finger control of pianissimo and isolation of the melody, it could get quite difficult. The 6th, i've discovered, is just pure power and some virtuosic technique and requires almost no control. according to wiki.

According to critiques however, the 6th etude "Vision" is actually the most accessible! Only one week already, I can play it albeit slowly. It's just basically arpeggios, with a simple tune and alternating rapid chords on a single hand (notably the end), which is actually simple and easy to speed on. The 5th one is just insane, I concede.

Hmm, dont be so complacent of Old Brahms, in between the schwarf theres some gold to be found. If you can, find a Glenn Gould rendering of the Op117 - 119, absoloutly fantastic stuff!

Haven't heard the intermezzo but the 6th etude is very very difficult, although it doesn't sound that way. But the etude is an amazing piece of music and I prefer Liszt to Brahms any day.
