It started as a possible case of food poisoning but within weeks turned into a grim spectacle of enormous political proportions: Aleksander Litvinenko, former member of the Russian secret service, died in his place of residence London last November, after having been poisoned with a radioactive substance. The search for the possible perpetrators lead to a political difficult situation that reminded us of the dark days of the Cold War.Three years ago Aleksander Litvinenko told his life story to documentary maker Jos De Putter. It is a wild tale full of conspiracies, assassination attempts and imputations. Litvinenko talks about his time with the secret service, about his experience in Chechnya, and in particular about the series of bomb attacks on Russian territory that led to the seizure of power by Vladimir Putin. According to Litvinenko those attacks were the work of the secret service. After Litvinenko's funeral in December 2006, Backlight spoke to Litvinenko's widow. Marina Litvinenko is writing a book about her husband. The book will be published in May 2007 and the film rights have already been sold to Columbia Pictures. In this unique interview, she speaks about how they first met, how they fled to England and she speaks about Aleksander´s death agony. We also see Litvinenko's father Walter, with Chechen leader and Litvinenko's closest friend Akhmed Zakayev and the prominent Russian exile Vladmir Bukovsky, also a friend of Litvinenko. The result is an impressive 55-minute portrait of a former spy whose death brought him worldwide fame.Directors: Jos de Putter and Masja NovikovaVPRO Backlight 2007For more info, please visit: http://www.vpro.nl/programma/t...

The reason why he had to flee russia is because him and berezovsky were indirectly involved in making ridiculous amount of money by supplying chechen war lords with information/supplies etc. In spetnaz training videos I have seen, they use litvinenkos face posters as targets for knife throwing and fire arm practice. This dude was a corrupt officer who fled to England that for everyones FYI is big on hiding criminals because they do not have extradition laws. Them be facts. Respect.

I mean.its sad that this dude died, but lets keep it real. He was a traitor to his nation, PUTIN had zero to do with his death, and if you do research on Litvinenko he was never near any sensitive KGB/FSB data through out his career in the bureau

I think that the reason that Litvinenko is so popular is that he looks like anybody in my country and people can identify with him. And it´s also another factor that makes Putin popular, he looks like a everydayman and people have sympathy for him. Hopefully after this the influence from old KGB will be removed and FSB reformed. Alex Goldfarb have been a true friend too him and the only one besides Zakajev and Berezovskij that havent been selfish.

We don´t know who killed Litvinenko. But I think after reading Alex Goldfarb´s and Marina Litvinenko´s book:"Death of a Dissi-dent", that it was intended as a warning to Boris Berezovskij. "Stop your activities" The eastern president don´t want to kill him since Boris was the most important factor to help him win the election in 2000. The president said that they would always be friends, and he is a man that stand by hi´s word. The bad PR will reduce old thinking like Krutchkoff´s..
