I've heard about this movie. Strange to think it was directed by the same guy who did, 'Frankenstein', 'The Invisible Man' and 'The Bride of Frankenstein'.

I watched the the whole thing and loved it then looked at the 1951 remake and just couldn't get into it. This is by far the best version, Irens Dunn, Helen Morgan, what could be better, thanks!

We should not judge the story by modern , more enlightened times, but just enjoy the craft of the film maker ; the songs and the performance of Alan Jones ( father Jack Jones)...its only make believe.

our director is using the song "can't help loving that man of mine" nine times al together in the show i'm afraid our audience will die of boardem i know it fits in well as a theme and i do like the song but using it over and over again God ok he's only using bits of it but still it will just get redicuals. We use it around three or four times in Act 2. and I think five times in act 1. it's a good show but...... Well maybe i'm wrong maybe our audience will never tire of that song.

Regarding the "Black Mamie" and characters of that nature...."Human nature viewed in its crudest state as seen amongst African savages is quite on the level with that of the brute and not to be compared with the noble character of the dog. There is neither gratitude, pity, love, or self denial, no religion, nothing but covetousness, ingratitude, selfishness and cruelty."----Samuel BakerSame message being conveyed but different package.Disgraceful these kinds of films are....

Besides Helen Westley and Queenie Smith, all the major principals in the 1936 movie had performed in one of several stage productions of "Show Boat" - Broadway (1927 and 1932), London, West Coast company, etc... And Irene Dunne understudied the original Magnolia, Norma Terris, and assumed her part when the original 1927 Broadway company took the production on tour.
