It's a technique called Hammer-ons, and he may even have done Pull-offs. Hammer-ons are when you just quickly put your finger on the fret of the guitar, with enough force to make it sound. Pull-offs on the other hand, is the opposite. It's when you take a finger off, but you do it in a way that the string sounds in whichever fret is behind the fret you just let go. E.g. You have a finger on the 5th, and 4th fret. If you pull-off from the 5th, then the 4th will sound. Both need no strumming.
