This is such a beautiful song and video, it brought tears to my eyes. I've just started learning yiddish but you can understand a lot from the animation alone. Oh yiddishe mame!

Also, yiddish is taught by organizations such as the arbeter ring to secular jews, and I'm sure in judaic studies programs.

There are Jews, who due to converting, have no Jewish ancestry, but as they have converted and joined the Jewish nation (not the same as the Jewish State) they are Jews. Quite frankly, I'm not sure why you are challenging the understanding of the nature of Jewishness, that has been held by Jews since time immemorial. And that has been recognised by the majority of non-Jewish nations for the same length of time.

Medracin. Jews are an ethnic group who have a national self identity and always have had. Please don't confuse Israel with Judaism. Israel is a modern nationalist state, not the traditional expression of Jewish nationhood. But under the 1970 amendment of the law of return, Converts to Judaism are eligible for immediate citizenship of the State as are all Jews. Judaism is not universal, as it states quite clearly, the laws of the faith apply only to Jews, not the entire world.

An ethnic group is not a nation. An ethnic group is a collective group of people who share the same ancestry. Also, I doubt that by becoming a Jew you join the nation of Israel. If I were to convert tomorrow, I would still not be allowed to enter Israel without a visa, and the authorities would not consider me as being a citizen of Israel. How is Judaism not universal when people from all over the world, some with no "Jewish" ancestry are thought of as being Jews?
