my problem with this video is that she doesn't really get into the economics of the situation. there are people who profit off of women's hatred of themselves and who create the kind of advertising and climate which produces the alienation of people from their own bodies. but other than that there is a lot of good stuff in the book and the video.

Far and away the biggest eating disorder is OVEREATING. Being fat is terrible for one's physical and mental health. Being fat is a sign of laziness and lack of self control. Stop with the sob stories already and all these absurd lies about how beauty standards are all cultural constructs.

you obviously weren't listening. She was saying that the growing disparity between the average woman and the "model" woman's size were so distant-- it's driving more women to drastic actions in order to achieve that standard.

She has actually counselled girls face to face and they do let her know about their problems.I actually read Mary Piphers book which has the same title as this video.

That's the size of the "average" woman, just because you might be different naturally, doesn't mean you're any less of a person.

yes. there are those girls. there are tons of girls. with tons or perspectives. im sure these people dont know they lie cause thay dont know them! she is a therapist, and took courses but courses can never really teach anyone how any one persons brain works, or anything about them really. not about there personality. you need time to do that. time which these people dont have, or use.
burnasmiley (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
but i know at that point, i wont understand the youth then. i have watched people straight up lie, up down and sideways to teachers, police and parents. you cant read into us, you dont even really care. dont say you do.maybe, just maybe if you really took the time to know us. read our expressions, our voices. youd know but until that day comes when you can think like a kid. youll just have to beleive what "ophelia" sais.

Say What you will. But i know how my brin works and how alot of my riends brains work. you can read into lies, into their minds through there minds but no matter how hard you powere tripping people work you will never know, because you never saved that neverneverland in your mind that could have told you how our minds really work. your just a grown up. and i will be too.

no, she means that on average, most american women are around that height or weight. she is saying that the girls in those magazines aren't what most american girls look like, not that those who don't look like that aren't real.
