I am thinking how if he use the fluidy roof function as the solar panels, then it will be cool.. but.. it seems like not..so, i think it is like meaning less to do those fluid roof as it is not functionable..

Sus edificaciones son sinceramente nauseabundas, sobrecarga tanto que son vomitivas... Son un reflejo de su espiritu, como que lo tiene que limpiar

It´s obvious that you must have a powerful reason to go for curves, they increase costs and make the building process more complicated. FLW convinced his client to take the risk for function. What´s the point of covering a building with a skin that has nothing to do with what´s sheltering and that´s complicated as hell, and very, very expensive?. I had to pay that with my taxes for the glory of mr. Gehry and the mayor of Bilbao.

We can discuss weather a building is functional or not, but it´s not the point. FLW had one clear idea: one continuous space, a gallery to be visited following an itinerary, but in a relatively small piece of land. Not different halls in different floors. Solution?: spiral. That floor plan transfers its image to the exterior in a natural way. You can like it or not, but it´s honest. I think it works pretty well. But, what´s the point with mr. Gehry´s shapes?. What do they stand for?.

When the first Guggenheim came out, there was a petition from artists against the building. They claimed that it wasn't functional enough to display their artwork. Understandably, working with curved walls is difficult. Another criticism is that the building competed with the art (just like Gehry's building.) The building became a challenge for curators and artists to do installations within the rotunda space. To put it simply some art will be overwhelmed by the space.

Nothing to do with FLW. He was attacked for doing something new, yes, but the shape of the Guggenheim is a result of the function of the gallery. What are the estetic similarities between Robie House and Guggenheim?. FG maybe did something new once, but it´s enough, and it was based upon nothing. Le Corbusier repeated his principles in every building, non-structural fachade, pilotis, transitable flat top... but function after all, he had scientific reasons, and he adapted them to local needs.

I disagree. I don´t find it dishonest to earn a lot of money building shopping malls. I find dishonest to create an artificial progression that has nothing to do with the function of the building you are planning and the landscape where you are working. He keeps imitating himself around the world, and he will continue doing it as long as there are snob clients and ignorant politicians.

Well no. He could have been wealthy earlier on in his career and gone through less hardship if he had stuck to shopping malls with Rouse and Co. He obviously followed a different path and took a lot of risks. The same accusations that are being made toward Gehry were made at FLW. Both broadened the field of architecture and both technically and artistically. His curvilinear buildings are part of a progression. If you look at his past work you can see it. |
