Jan 2001Most people at 59 would be content with having a business empire that spans the globe, yet Michael Bloomberg's ambition now is the top job at City Hall.With an estimated fortune of 5 billion US dollars, derived mainly from sales of the "Bloomberg box" --the financial information centre that is used world wide, money cannot be his motivation. "It's the greatest city in the World" proclaims Bloomberg. "The opportunity to lead it and to make a difference is just too much to pass up." Some view his wealth favourably -- "I really wish he would become the Mayor.. I'd like a rich guy so I wouldn't be worried about where they are getting their next buck from. Others are more critical, claiming Bloomberg wants the job rather like someone else would want a private jet or a new yacht. But Bloomberg needs all the luck he can get. He's been a life long Democrat but switched to the Republican party for this contest in what he concedes was an act of blatant self interest.
