Eric learned his greatest hit from this recording. She is so involved in this song that it has inspired millions of listeners into goose bumps frenzy and thousands more to pick up a guitar and try their hand at performing. Her whispered and exhausted warning to her sister is chilling when contrasted her powerful howls of pain directed to the whore house that's killing her.THIS is the the definitive version. Glad you came to hear it again.

I think you meant divine. And the animals version was vastly better than this one.The subject matter in this version may be a bit different, but she just seems weak in it. Not weak just in regards to the story/context, which is what she was going for, but weak in that she doesn't put as much of herself into the song as she normally does. Typically, she would be second only to Dylan or Johnston in that regard, but both the animals and dylan have her beat here. Her's is good, not great.

devine, more like it.The story of a broken down prostitute is so much more compelling than the white bread version with the out of luck gambler by the Animals.

wrong! It is among her best. I wish she had let her Odetta muse run wild more often.

Interesting, but not her best work. She's trying to sound like Odetta, and it's not Joan's style.

One of the greatest talents in 'telling' a song on earth today. |
