I think they would have got better results if they used a different type of explosive. A low explosive has a much stronger lifting effect. Of course, that wasn't the myth - but it would have been fun to watch.

The Mythbusters Dynamite surfing episode was flawed in many ways. The Thames video was in considerably shallower water, had close proximity to the shorebanks and structures and was a much smaller area in general. This event was possible due to the shallow water and energy reflection of the banks and structure. The Mythbusters wave was highly disipated to much deeper water, far proximity from shoreline and much larger area in general. Do it again in a similar environment!

what might have helped get the waves to break better would be the underwater topography. if the bottom was flat, then there would be no rising force to make a taller wave, whereas a gentle slope could generate very large waves (that was part of the problem with the thailand tsunami was the gentle slope of the underwater shelf).
