It's considered assault anywhere in the US if you stay closer than one arms distance. DI's just use it as a game. I remember I was chased by a DI years ago who had his arm out in front of him "ONE ARMS DISTANCE ONE ARMS DISTANCE RUN RECRUIT, RUUUUUUUUN"
