he had no choice BUT to cheat.his boat was supposed to be the MOST advanced sailing ship EVER and it wasn't.i agree with mrnice866 but also with tubelong.the guy screwed himself over and when karma came to bite him in the arse he took the only way out that didn't make him out as a bad guy at the time.EVERYONE in his family warned him but supported him in this and i am happy they did but donald knew better he wasn't even a seasoned sailer like everyone else was.he was AT BEST a weekend sailor

crowhurst did cheat. he not only planned it but executed it. he sent in made up positions.it wasn't until his scam was uncovered in Argentina by the Naval authority there that he finally came unhinged. he tried to find a discreet port in which to make the repair and continue cheating, but failed. he even lied about his name in the port.after that the game was blown. his demise had nothing to do with honour or courage. he just got caught. that's all. it's that simple and that pathetic.

I will strongly disagree with the last posting. This man put himself in a very difficult situation, and this cannot be denied. Facing ridicule, bankrupcy and expropriation, he had too great a sense of honour to go home as a cheat, and had the courage, not cowardness, to decide to take his own life rather than to fake it.A man who dared to go to the end of the world and back for his family.A true gentleman, who put himself in an awful situation, and faced the price he chose to pay.

Foremost it's a story of the UK dare-do cheating paralleled only by the US famous liars and cheats like Scott and Perry.
