The Jackson 5 performed Darling Dear on their third album (The Third Album). James Jamerson played bass on this selection with a style and fluency seldom heard in common hours. The bassline is so soulful and beautiful that many musicians speak of having "sung" the bassline instead of the equally great lead vocal line delivered by the gifted and prodigious Michael Jackson. The bassline would qualify as a "wonder of the world" since it is such a bold departure from anything heard at that time, or since. James Jamerson is arguably the greatest bass player to ever live. He played on more number 1 hit records than any other bassist, or musician in the history of popular music. He died a bitter and brokenhearted man since he was neither adequately compensated or recognized for his immeasurable contributions to the spirit and practice of bass playing.

its concentration- you sometimes screw up your face when you are doing difficult figures that are hard for your fingers to get to!

Jamerson was the king of soul and R&B bass- Check out some of the Jackson 5 live cuts here on youtube and watch Jermaine Jackson play as well as the Motown studio greats on stage! Jermaine never got the acclaim he deserved due to (of course) the long arm of Barry Gordy!

Interesting dialogue here..I was friends with and fished with Percy Heath (MJQ) out of Montauk Point up until his death. We often spoke about music and musicians. He was NEVER impressed with ANY musicians speed on their particular instrument but was instead more interested in what they "SAID" with it. Jamersons playing to a "T".

And on top of everything else that has been said, Jamerson wasn't just playing when he felt like it, like most of the people you named. He was on the clock day after day, and I don't know about you, but that sure seems difficult to do. Especially the intricate lines he was playing. Most of the guys you named lack a certain tone and feel that just doesn't get me anywhere near the way Jamerson gets me. Also I think all of them would pay a great deal of their technique and motivation to James.
