I have always loved this film, too, for the feeling I get whenever I see it. Karloff is simply wonderful and, your heart aches for his lost love calling out over the centuries...

It's the exaggerated theatricallity of the performance that makes it so spell-binding... The Method killed all that. Since Brando and Dean all actors feel compelled to brood through each scene... How boring!!! The mood of this film envelopes the actors and the story- that's why it's so mesmerizing to watch. Modern actors would never subjugate themselves to the mood like this... Karloff was an artist, not just an artiste... 500 years from now, people will celebrate this film, and Karloff.
