the mimic octopus imitates up to 15 other species, the wonderpus is just a beautifully colored octopus.

are you serious?this is called batesian mimicryit does it to copy deadly animals (like the lion fish)so it doesnt get attacked?

" Er ... or maybe its a defense mechanism? Trying to imitate the appearance of predators, so it itself doesn't get attacked/eaten?

That's correct. The Wunderpus has eyelike markings, not stripes
