TAI FUFrom July to September each year, Japan lives in fear of Tai Fu - or typhoons - that are renowned for taking lives and devastating coastlines. When the typhoons hit, everyone from the hi-tech cities to sleepy fishing towns stop and brace themselves for the hellish onslaught.Last month, in a continuation of his quest to traverse the globe in search of new and challenging waves, Australia's veteran big-wave adventurer, Ross Clarke-Jones set out to harness that energy and surf a typhoon in Japan.Ross was joined by local Japanese tow-surfer Shimpei Horiguchi and a crew of some of the most experienced big-wave surfers on the planet including Tom Carroll, Brazilian Carlos Burle, Hawaiians Ian Walsh and Jun Jo and fellow Aussie Beau Emerton.

Um...yea. I've spent 25 years in the barrel on Okinawa. Maybe your comment is true for Sunabe and other non-direct swell points, but it's 99% shallow (like can't surf it at low tide shallow)reef break. At head high, it throws huge, gaping, barrels with thick lips that will snap a board like a tooth pick. The bigger it gets, the more dangerous it gets. When big Zampa outside and direct swell points look like Teahupoo, but can't hold the size without sucking the reef dry.
