"G-Force" is much more faithful to "Gatchaman" than "Voltron" was to "Golion". Apart from the name/music changes and the cutting out of extreme, TV-PG esque violence (firearms, deaths by firearms, violence between G-Force members) "G-Force" was a near straight translation of "Gatchaman" as ADV's dub of Gatch would later do (albeit much better). "Battle of the Planets", the the first English dub of "Gatchaman" BEFORE "G-Force", now that is the "watered down" version of "Gatchaman".

Battle of the Planets (1978) is the American dub of the 1972 TV anime known as Kagaku ninja tai Gatchaman. Of the 105 original Gatchaman episodes, 85 were used in the Battle of the Planets adaptation, produced by Sandy Frank Entertainment. This formed the basis for "G-Force:Guardians of Space" which was a wholly reworked show which debuted nearly a decade later (1986).I also remember battle of the planets and watched it as it aired originally in '78 shortly after the debut of Star Wars.

This really takes me back. I remember watching this show everyday after school back when I was a kid in the mid 90's and for the longest time, I though this was the coolest show ever and actually dreamed of being a member of G-Force (kinda silly, but then again, I was only like 6-7 while watching this). I'd love to see someone release a box set of G-Force.
