1.Orr 2.Harvey 3.Shore 4.Potvin 5.Stevens 6.Robinson 7.Bourque 8.Lidstrom 9.Coffey 9.Park (best never to win a Norris) 10.Leetch 11. Chelios 12.Savard 13.Langway 14.Salming 15.Lapointe 16. Fetisov 17. Al MacInnis 18. Niedermayer 19.Doug Wilson (longer career than I had thought) 20. Housley I am sure I am missing some guys and except for Harvey and Shore I can't make a call on players from their respective eras. Chris Pronger might reach the top 20 at some point.

good names. We never got to see the best of Fetisov but he deserves mention. Salming, Savard and Lapointe were all great and probably in the top 20 all time. Langway had a great run and learned well from the big three. I think he had a lot of Savard's game in him. Wilson's career was a little short but he was pretty good for awhile but I wouldn't rate him as a top 20 guy. There are others....I think I'll make a list here....

No you didn't, you saw Magnuson get knock out by Schultz. Schultz was actually holding Magnuson up by his jersey while Magnuson was out on his skates. Schultz wasn't that big either - Schultz was 6' 1" and 190 lbs. while Magnuson was 6" 0" and 185 lbs. They showed this fight as a highlight before every televised Philadelphia Flyer game back in the day.

I'll add a few more into the mix: His best years were with the Red Army but Fetisov was a great dman..and how about Borje Salming, and two of Robinsons teamates in Savard and Lapointe...I actually think Savard and Lapointe were better Dmen than Robinson...perhaps lesser impact players like Doug wilson and Rod Langway deserve note...and not to forget mark howe....lots of good names mentioned here from great era of hockey

true that bro...
sparwood8 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
and that is what makes this kind of speculating fun. Robinson was more punishing than Liddy

hmmmm. I grew up a Canadiens fan during the 70s and I just can't help but think you overrate The Big Bird just a little bit. I put him in the top ten of all defensemen I've seen. That's pretty damn good but he wasn't the real super dominating type of player. I am not knocking him but there are others. How could Lidstrom not be ahead of him? He's getting up there in age and hasn't really declined as much as Larry did when he moved to LA....
