My father fought in that war. So, despite my adoration of Beethoven, they'll always be the dirty hun to me.

Das ist halt Leonard Bernstein, wie man ihn kennt. Selbst bei der Aufführung der "Ode to Freedom" 1989 einige Monate vor seinem Tod dirigierte er noch mit vollem Körpereinsatz.

Ode to Joy is such a beautiful piece but I must confess after 4:40 it's kind of anticlimactic - you have that magnificent choral reprise and IMHO it goes down a bit from there.

A conductor doesn't have to be constantly conducting especially if the piece is rehearsed enough. Lenny likes to stop and listen while he conducts occasionally. :)

Germany has a wonderful and fascinating culture and history, and they have contributed as much as the next civilisation, I think Germany's going to be plagued by the Hitler jokes for quite a long time because of how relatively recent WWII was and how monstrous and evil the Nazis were. But for me I will always think of Germany for the HRE, the Hansa, Gutenburg, Bismarke, Beethoven, Bach and Handel.

At about 4:00 it looks like Bernstein stops conducting, I am rather uneducated when it comes to this stuff so is that what he really does? If so that is just unfathomably awesome...
