Mae Boren Axton (1914-1997) interviewed Elvis in 1955. The place, Jacksonville, Florida.Mae was a school teacher. Elvis had recently left his teens and was a whopping 20 years old:).Mrs Axton and her husband John had 2 sons. Mae was one of the co-writers of Heartbreak Hotel. She drowned in her hot tub at home in Hendersville, Tennessee at the age of 82.She spoke to Gail Brewer-Giorgio about the 10-10-88 mystery tape. She knew the story behind the story. She said things like "Yes! That part's true. I had forgotten all about that!" "That sounds just like Elvis-it has to be Elvis..."from Wikipedia:"For Mae as a school teacher to become it's ally was viewed by some like the Pope worshiping the Devil. Non the less, she pushed forward in her endeavors as an advocate of the music that would end up changing the industry forever."===================== ==================While living in Gainesville, Flordia, she and song-writing partner Tommy Durden were intrigued by the news of the man whose suicide note said only "I walk a lonely street." She imagined an inn at the end of it, turned it from the sad, sweet ballad Tommy had envisioned to an edgy rock number, then she christened their little song "Heartbreak Hotel." She had it demo'ed in Jacksonville, and sent it to Elvis, who recorded it as she had arranged it. Glenn Reeves, who demo'ed the song for her, called the song "extremely silly." Sun Records producer Sam Phillips proclaimed Elvis's final product "a morbid mess."It became Elvis's first gold record and first number one.Her son was country music singer Hoyt Axton (March 25, 1938 -- October 26, 1999)

hi, i couldnt agree with you more. my only real source about any news about elvis whilst he was alive, was buying Elvis Monthly, the wealth of info on the net is amazing. I have been a fan since 1968 and have learnt more in recent years than i ever knew back then. I just love it, so i thank everyone who takes the time to put elvis on the web, (good or bad), cos it shows "elvis is alive", and just the mere mention of his first name is enough to know who the person is talking about

"Many people sing blues songs but only a few know how to sing THE BLUES and Elvis was one of those".....Elvis didn't die only his body did.

Nouvorich..your right I saw a programme about soul singer Barry White and when he was young he went to prison and he said that while he lay in his cell he heard Elvis singing "I'ts Now or Never" he said it changed his life there and then.John Lennon said "Before Elvis there was nothing"and he also said"If it wasn't for Elvis you wouldn't have had the Beatles"James Brown said "He taught the white man how to get down" and B.B. King sais...continued

Thanks for this rare interview,Heartbreak Hotel was based on a true story after Mae Axton read of a man who killed himself at a Hotel because his girlfriend left him, hence the title and the lyrics"Well since my baby left me"and "I feel so lonley I could die"Going right of the subject 100 photos of Elvis at Madison Square Gardens in '72 have just been discovered and will be shown at an exhibition at Graceland some may be backstage.
