Because Terminator1111111: It's NOT How He Sounds -- It's What He SAYS. Besides, it's rock n' roll: You want a good voice, go buy yourself a Pavarotti CD. Bruce will never be known as a great singer, but he has a distinctive, voice known throughout rock & popular music. But then again (with the exception being his most loyal fans): It was never about Bruce The Singer as much as it was about it being Bruce The Songwriter; Bruce The Poet; Bruce The Working Man Expressionist. I may get crucified for saying this, but I think The Band's version of this, sung by Levon Helm, is waaaaay better. Springsteen himself has even said he considers The Band's version the definitive version of the song.
