The Belgian RC priest whose "big bang" theory (which was a term of ridicule), Georges Lemaitre, was dismissed as a crank by the scientific establishment, and was fought tooth and nail for decades, on philosophical and ideological grounds rigidly held by that same establishment, only later to be vindicated. Oops, all of this was supposed to be a reply to Tancred2008.P.S. The scientist who DIS-Proves the big-bang would be heralded by other scientists as a hero, once the egos get out of the way. The theologist who disproves creation or the flood... well... nice lecture anyhow sir and thanks.

Self-righteousness condemnation of anyone's viewpoint is a bit to confident for my tastes. I can't say that religion has it wrong, but I can say that there are certainly many viewpoints and that some make more or less sense to me when viewed objectively. An entire ideology that takes pride in stalwartly defending against anything opposed to its dogma seems to radically contradict any notion of progress in our world. Notice the absence of ad-hominem attack as well, not needed for a discussion.

Science teaches to question everything, especially the most "established" theories. Whether humans who call themselves "scientist" do that or not is debatable, but the ideology is certainly more consistent than one that say it already knows the "Truth" and then does its best to eradicate anyone/anything that contradicts that truth. Add that theology to the power that comes with politics, police enforcement, and media control, and things get pretty scary!

Didn't the church persecute Galileo? Is that relevant at all to your viewpoint? I thought that we let religion rule the world for a long time and that we called it the dark ages? I don't think there is a thing wrong with believing in something greater that lies without yourself, but history has shown that humans + righteous self assurance is really not harmless, not helpful, and not conducive to the furtherance of any sort of science or progress.
