He's definitely tapping (starting at 5:42). Frank, Brian May and others were using two-handed tapping before EVH. Eddie just figured it out in depth and put the technique in the map.

i was 10 yrs old ,my dad brought home a box of 33 rpms from an estate sale.the first one was "one size fits all", i was floored . i still am finding zappa i havent heard today. a genius

He was asked if he was underrated, and his reply was he shouldn't be rated because rating guitar players is a stupid hobby, and that there were plenty off guys who played faster then him and never made a mistake, and they were a dime a dozen. Frank took chances with his playing which to me makes him WAY more interesting to listen to. Just when it sounds like he's going to blow it, he doesn't. Makes for some great tension!
